Vic: Bipartisan support for Vic sex offenders register

A Victorian government plan for a register of sex offenders has won bipartisan supportand may go nationwide.

Serious sex offenders would have their names placed on the new statewide Sex OffenderRegister -- to be run by Victoria Police.

The information would be available only to police, victims and families of dead victims.

State Police Minister ANDRE HAERMEYER says he's written to other police ministers witha view to setting up a national database.

The plan -- to be introduced into the spring session of parliament -- has receivedsupport from the state opposition.

Opposition police spokesman KIM WELLS says it's unacceptable that offenders be releasedinto the community without monitoring.

Mr WELLS also backed the plan for a national register.

Mr HAERMEYER says a parallel victims' register will be set up, giving information onstatus, location and impending release of offenders.

Mr HAERMEYER says everything must be done to minimise the risk that serious sex offenderswill re-offend when released from prison.
