Qld: Smorgon Steel to spend $17 mln on Qld plant expansion

Smorgon Steel Group says it'll spend $17 million to expand its Acacia Ridge plant inQueensland, creating 72 new jobs.

Managing director and chief executive RAY HORSBURGH says the expansion will allow theMelbourne-based steel manufacturer to better service its customer base.

Queensland Minister for State Development TOM BARTON says the company will establishnew tube mills at the plant, expanding production capacity by 60 per cent.

Smorgon Steel produces about one million tonnes of steel annually and is one of theleading suppliers of steel products to Australian industry.

It employs more than 5,000 workers throughout Australia.
