Qld: Coroner to hand down air crash report today
A coronial inquest report into one of Australia's worst civilian air crashes is expected
to be handed down in Brisbane today.
Two pilots and 13 passengers died when a twin-engine aircraft crashed on approach to
the Lockhart River Aboriginal community on Cape York in far north Queensland in May 2005.
Queensland state coroner MICHAEL BARNES will deliver the findings of his inquest into
the crash .. which took evidence on Thursday Island in the Torres Strait .. and Brisbane.
While the report is expected to make recommendations for improvements to air safety
.. Mr BARNES could also recommend the Director of Public Prosecutions consider charges.
A damning report by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau has previously blamed pilot
recklessness.
It also slammed the now defunct operator TransAir's poor safety culture .. and failure
by aviation safety body CASA to detect problems.
