FED:Both parties back high-speed rail link

A high-speed rail network on along the eastern seaboard has won the backing of both
sides of politics .. with Labor promising the construction of an inland rail link between
Brisbane and Melbourne.

Transport Minister ANTHONY ALBANESE has rejected suggestions both projects are pie-in-the-sky
schemes .. even though they've been talked about for more than two decades.

He says a re-elected Labor government will initiate a 20-million dollar feasibility
study for a high-speed rail network linking Brisbane .. Sydney .. Canberra and Melbourne
.. with a particular focus on the Sydney-Newcastle leg.

The study will begin later this year .. and is expected to take about 18 months.
